LAC Presents: Adult Pastel Drawing with David Shkolny

Discover the beauty and expressiveness of soft (chalk) pastels! In this class, you will learn to take a drawing from an initial sketch through to layers of vibrant colour, exploring techniques to create vivid and expressive artwork.
- Set of good quality soft (chalk) pastels (Sennelier, Shmincke, Unison, Nupastel), minimum 24. Cheaper sets may have poor colour adhesion. You may also buy single pastels to make your own set.
- Augment with some good darks (almost black) in blue, green, and brown.
- Paper:
- One Tobacco Brown 19” x 26”
- Three Pastel Premier in Italian Clay colour 9” x 12”
- Kneadable eraser
- Soft vine charcoal (medium thickness)
- Small bottle isopropyl alcohol and a few bristle brushes
- Masking tape
- Ruler
- Drawing board (approx. 14” x 18”, masonite works well)
- Easel (optional, tabletop works)
- Apron to protect your clothes
- Transport materials for finished work, including light protective paper for smudging prevention
About the Instructor
David Shkolny was born in 1969 in Pinawa, Manitoba, and grew up in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. He studied at Red Deer College and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting and Printmaking) from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1992.
David works in soft pastels, acrylic, oil, and printmaking, spending extensive time painting, sketching, and gathering reference material across Alberta and Canada. He has been teaching art for over 20 years, specializing in pastels. His work is included in public collections such as University Hospital and Fort Saskatchewan City Hall, and he is an associate artist with Unison Colour, UK.
